Attention to this picture attracted me the name of the director, and the director just terrified what a wonderful creator of such films as “I am a cyborg, but this is normal”, “Sympathy for Mr. Revenge”, “Sympathy for Mrs. Revenge” and (my favorite film) “Oldboy”, in general, none other than Pak Chan-Uk.
If you delve into the vampire theme, you can recall quite a few pictures, because vampires have frightened people for a very long time, and sneaked into cinema in 1922, and began tyrannizing people's minds through the screens of cinemas and televisions. The vampires were different, beautiful and terribly ugly, and they were also disgustingly pretty (“The Twilight Saga” and “Queen of the Damned” just scream about it). We had white vampires, black vampires, Asian vampires (direct union for all races), even Mexican vampires worried. Almost all nations and countries had a vampire illness, and dark creatures inspired terror and fear. But what did the film “Thirst” stand out from hundreds of pictures about fanged bloodsucking creatures? It will sound a little silly, namely, the absence of fanged creatures (I did not say anything about the bloodsucking, well, everyone saw it ?!)
The Vampire from “Thirst” is not a forever living handsome man with a striking, radiant appearance, it is not a product of evil, it’s like a person with an incurable disease. The symptoms of which, bloodlust, incredible strength and regeneration, passion for immoral acts. Moreover, the protagonist of the film is simply the opposite of all dark characters, he is a priest who has given himself to achieve a higher goal, to cure lepers, which killed him. This alone causes a certain resonance, the vampire priest, who is still trying to follow all his principles and tries not to leave his world views as if nothing had happened to him, as if everything was in perfect order.
An excellent game of unknown Korean actors (well, like someone, and they are familiar to me from the director’s previous films), plunges into a cruel and incredibly gray world in which death rules everything, in which greed and the desire to live forever pushes people to unjustified actions. Great music simply contradicts events, in moments of cruelty it is so soft and gentle that a horrible sight suddenly takes on a tinge of beauty. On top of that, pleasure is delivered by good special effects, they reinforce the atmosphere of unusual events.
The film can cause boredom, can turn away from itself the number of erotic scenes, or cause disgust from the bloody scenes. But did I say that this movie is for everyone? For those who are filled with ordinary vampires, those who no longer insert “Let Me In” from the Swedes, those who hate the pretty-beautiful vampires, the film “Thirst” will appeal to fans, as well as the director's fans. From myself, I also highly recommend, just remember, I warned about sex, about violence and the absence of Edward Cullen =)
